General Elections Details and Process - 2009
The system of elections in India has seen a lot of evolution since the first General Elections was held after Independence in 1951. The introduction of photo electoral rolls, photo identity cards and electronic voting machines has resulted in elections becoming more simple, transparent and fair. Today, elections are more of a National festival, where citizens display their loyalty to leaders and ideologies by discussing, campaigning, voting for and celebrating when their candidate wins.
Being the largest democracy in the world, elections are an important symbol of the democratic process in India. As every citizen cannot directly participate in the decision making process of the Nation, we have to choose certain people who will work to promote our interests and welfare from the top. For this purpose, the country holds elections for positions at various levels - National, State and local.
Currently, the country is buzzing with election fever with the Fifteenth Lok Sabha Elections set to commence later this month. Simultaneously, elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Sikkim and bye-elections to vacant seats in other State Legislative Assemblies will be held.
